East Jordan resident Thomas Ned Grutsch, 69, became the latest victim of Michigan’s unpredictable winter weather on Tuesday morning, when he was involved in a fatal accident on U.S. 131 in Bear Creek Township. The icy conditions and snowfall were determined to be the primary factors contributing to the crash, which took place shortly after 9:00 a.m.
According to the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police, Grutsch’s southbound 2007 Chevrolet Silverado lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding with a 2018 Freightliner semi-truck. The semi-truck driver, a 41-year-old man from Sears, could not avoid the collision.
An 81-year-old driver in a Chevrolet Express van also became involved as he attempted to swerve away from the chaos, but no injuries were reported aside from the loss of Grutsch’s life.
Grutsch’s untimely death has left a profound impact on his family, friends, and the larger East Jordan community. Known for his dedication to his loved ones and his involvement in local activities, Grutsch’s absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
Funeral arrangements have been made for Friday, Dec. 13, at Gaylord E-Free Church, where services will honor his life and legacy. Pastor Scott Distler will lead the ceremony, and visitors are welcome from 10 a.m. to noon.
The tragic incident underscores the inherent dangers of winter driving in Michigan and serves as a poignant reminder for drivers to remain vigilant during hazardous weather conditions.
