A joyful birthday gathering at the South Carolina Motorplex in Orangeburg County ended in heartbreak last weekend when gunfire erupted, claiming one life and injuring two others.




Reggie Dantzler, a 40-year-old drag racer and mechanic passed away in the shooting. For his family and friends, Dantzler was more than just a racing enthusiast—he was a pillar of support and a source of inspiration. His passion for the sport and dedication to his craft earned him admiration across the community.

Chief Deputy Chandra Gibbs detailed the tragic chain of events: “An altercation arose during the celebration, escalating into gunfire that led to this devastating outcome.” The incident unfolded around 6 p.m. on Saturday when deputies responded to reports of shots fired at the racetrack.


Two others, including a minor, were also struck by the gunfire. Both are currently recovering and receiving support for the trauma they endured.

Law enforcement is appealing to those who attended the event to share any evidence or details that could aid the investigation. “Community members have been reaching out with videos, accounts, and theories about what happened,” Gibbs noted, underscoring the importance of collective action in bringing the perpetrator to justice.

As the investigation continues, Dantzler’s family is calling for peace and unity, urging the community to honor his memory by fostering a spirit of compassion and support.
