The passing of Omar Zia, principal of The Woodlands School in Mississauga, has left a profound sense of loss among the educational community and beyond. His work with the Peel District School Board was complemented by his active involvement in organizations like the Muslim Educators Network of Ontario and the Muslim Employees Association of Peel, where he served as Chair. 

These roles allowed him to amplify voices often marginalized in mainstream education, addressing systemic racism and advocating for structural change. Outside the classroom, Omar’s contributions to his community were just as impactful. 

A member of the clergy, he worked tirelessly to mentor Muslim youth and lead initiatives that fostered a sense of belonging. His leadership and advocacy inspired countless educators and students to follow in his footsteps, ensuring his vision for a fair and inclusive society will endure.

Omar’s battle with cancer demonstrated the same strength and resilience he brought to every aspect of his life. His legacy is a testament to the power of compassion, justice, and an unyielding commitment to making the world a better place.
