Tuesday evening brought heartbreak to Topeka as 49-year-old Lavaughn Lewis became the victim of a fatal gunshot wound in what authorities have classified as a homicide. Police responded to the 2000 block of S.W. 12th at 5:19 p.m., where they found Lewis critically injured. Despite rapid response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

This tragedy marks the 20th homicide in Topeka this year, a grim milestone underscoring the city’s struggle with rising violence. The area surrounding 2014 S.W. 12th was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape, and investigators worked diligently into the night, searching for clues and piecing together what led to the fatal shooting.
