On the morning of February 22, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, resulting in the deaths of Officer Andrew Duarte and the assailant, Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz. The event has left the community mourning and seeking answers.

At approximately 10:35 a.m., Archangel-Ortiz, 49, entered the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) armed with a handgun and carrying zip ties. He proceeded to take several staff members hostage, including a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian. Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police Department was among the first responders to the scene. Tragically, during the confrontation, Officer Duarte was fatally shot. Two other officers and the three hospital staff members sustained injuries before Archangel-Ortiz was shot and killed by responding officers. No patients were harmed during the incident. 




Authorities revealed that Archangel-Ortiz had been at the ICU earlier in the week for a medical purpose involving another individual. This prior visit suggests that his attack was premeditated, targeting the ICU workers specifically. The motive behind his actions remains under investigation. 

Officer Andrew Duarte's untimely death has deeply affected the community. He was recognized for his dedication to public service and had previously been honored for his efforts in impaired driving enforcement. His commitment to ensuring public safety was evident throughout his career. In a statement, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro mourned the loss, stating, "Tragically, we lost one of those heroes today. Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough PD was the best of us—he lived a life of service to others that has been cut far too short." 

The aftermath of the shooting has seen an outpouring of grief and support from the community. A memorial has been established at the West York Borough Police Department, where residents have been leaving flowers and messages of condolence. The hospital staff, despite the traumatic experience, have been lauded for their professionalism and bravery during the crisis. Governor Shapiro also praised the first responders and medical professionals, stating, "In the midst of senseless violence, law enforcement ... ." 

Multiple state and federal agencies, including the Pennsylvania State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, ... , and Explosives (AT ... ), are collaborating in the investigation. Authorities are working diligently to uncover the motive behind Archangel-Ortiz's actions and to provide answers to the grieving community. The hospital has since been secured, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. 

This tragic event underscores the risks that law enforcement and medical professionals face daily. As the community of York comes to terms with the loss of Officer Duarte and the traumatic experience endured by the hospital staff, there is a collective resolve to support one another and honor the memories of those affected. Vigils and memorial services are being planned, providing spaces for communal grieving and reflection.
