The Auburn University community is mourning the loss of Rev. Chette Williams, who tragically passed away in a drowning accident. For over 25 years, Williams served as the chaplain to Auburn’s football team, offering spiritual support and guidance to generations of athletes. His impact, however, was not confined to the football field—he was a servant leader, committed to spreading faith and love throughout the Auburn campus and beyond.
Born and raised with a deep sense of faith, Mr. Williams played football for the Auburn Tigers during the 1980s under Coach Pat Dye. After his athletic career, Williams embraced his calling to ministry, returning to Auburn as the football team’s chaplain, where he ministered to players, coaches, and staff with a spirit of kindness and humility. His dedication to supporting Auburn’s student-athletes was unwavering, and his positive influence left a lasting mark on the program.
In addition to his role with the football team, Williams was the Campus Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), where he encouraged students to embrace their faith and apply it to every aspect of their lives. He also directed Urban Ministries and served as the President of Chette Williams Ministries, touching countless lives with his spiritual leadership.
Mr. Williams was known for his infectious smile, warm presence, and compassionate heart. He embodied the principles of the Auburn Creed—hard work, service, and belief in the power of the human touch. His death leaves a profound loss for the Auburn community, but his legacy of faith, kindness, and service will continue to inspire future generations.
