A routine ice-fishing trip turned into a devastating tragedy for two well-respected brothers from Abbotsford. Case and Erik Timmermans, who owned and operated Timmermans Landscaping and Tree Service, drowned after falling through the ice on Grace Lake northwest of Agassiz on February 4.
The Agassiz RCMP reported that at approximately 11:15 p.m. on February 4, a family member became concerned when the brothers failed to return home from their trip. Upon arriving at the lake, they discovered a large hole in the ice alongside abandoned fishing gear. Authorities were immediately notified, and an extensive search-and-rescue operation ensued.
Search teams from Kent-Harrison, Mission, and Chilliwack, along with the RCMP’s underwater recovery team, worked tirelessly to locate the missing men. The operation, described by officials as extremely challenging due to the conditions, resulted in the heartbreaking discovery of their bodies beneath the ice.
This tragic accident serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers associated with ice fishing, even for experienced individuals. Authorities continue to stress the importance of taking necessary precautions when venturing onto frozen lakes, including checking ice thickness, carrying safety equipment, and ensuring others are aware of one’s plans.
